MY MOTHER LIKES WOMEN
Dir: Ines Paris & Daniela Fejerman, Spain, 2001, 35mm, 96 mins, Spanish with English subtitles
When Elvira and her two sisters dine with their mother, Sofia, to celebrate her birthday, they are met with some unexpected news. Sofia, a famous pianist, long separated from the girls’ father, has fallen in love again. The girls are delighted for her. But there’s more. Sofia’s new partner is a woman. The girls try to react like the modern, tolerant grown-ups they’re supposed to be, but quickly get selfishly and hilariously lost as the news impacts on their own lives. Neurotic Elvira descends into a profound crisis of sexual identity, and to make matters worse, she meets the man who could be the love of her life. The sisters embark on a frenzied adventure to separate their mother from her new lover… which ends in a way they could least imagine. This engaging comedy is the first Spanish feature film to be directed by an all-woman team. It’s guaranteed to make you laugh out loud!
Rating: M - Contains offensive language and sexual themes
