LATTER DAYS

Dir: C J Cox, USA, 2003, 35mm, 110 mins

Latter DaysReel Queer is pleased to present one of the year’s most controversial films – at least it is in Salt Lake City, where theatres refused to show it, conservative Mormon groups denounced it, and the filmmakers and actors were sent hate mail. You may wonder what on earth all the fuss is about… What could be so horrible to have got the Mormon Church in such a lather? A sweet love story, actually.

Christian is a hopelessly handsome party boy whose life is devoted to casual sex. A waiter in a Los Angeles restaurant owned and operated by the radiantly maternal Lila (Jacqueline Bisset), Christian accepts a $50 wager from his co-workers that he will be able to seduce Elder Aaron (Steve Sandvoss), an apparently straight Mormon missionary who has moved into the apartment opposite.

Following one of Hollywood's favorite clichés, what begins as a cynical bet develops into a deep romance. After some initial resistance, Aaron surrenders to Christian's charms, discovering his homosexuality in the process. At the same time Christian discovers, in Aaron's sincerity and innocence, the deeper values that have been missing from his own life.

Latter Days

When Aaron's missionary roommates walk in on his first, tentative embrace with Christian, scandal ensues. (New York Times)

Gay director C J Cox knows his stuff; he’s a former Mormon missionary himself. With tender, convincing performances, and passionate lovemaking scenes, Latter Days is one of the highlights in this year’s Out Takes line-up.
